New ink stick. Just dip one end in water and then grind on a flat surface such as the one in an ink well.

INKWELL

Large inkwell with calligraphy brush and ink stick. The middle surface is where ink is made by grinding a wet ink stick. Note the trough around the center surface. This trough can be used to hold the water needed to grind ink or as a storage for pre-made ink.

The process of making ink. Not shown is the water that would normally be in the trough that surrounds the grinding surface. Some calligraphers prefer to use different container for water because it makes the inkwell easier to move.

A smaller inkwell than the one above. Note the water trough at one end of the well. The size of the inkwell is solely dependent on the amount of writing.
